Not every ending
needs improving.
Leave It Like That catches the point where two people have exhausted every version of the same conversation. One of them is almost out of the door, but familiar habits keep threatening to pull them back into it. There is no dramatic final argument and no attempt to rescue what is already finished; sometimes the cleanest ending is simply refusing to have the conversation again.
You stood there with your coat half on
Like you hadn’t picked a side yet
Keys in hand, not moving still
Like you might forget why you left
I said nothing, watched you wait
You kept looking at the floor
If there’s something you need to say
You’ve already said it before
We don’t need another round
Same words, same way down
Leave it like that, don’t fix it now
Don’t turn it back into something loud
We both know where this one goes
No need to spell it out slow
Leave it like that, just let it sit
No clean ending, just call it it
You don’t have to make it right
Just don’t stay and drag it out tonight
You sat down but didn’t stay
Just long enough to change your mind
Said my name like it still worked
Then dropped it like you lost the line
I could push, I could ask
But it’s already worn thin
If I pull at it again
We just end up here again
Nothing new gets said this time
Just the same in different lines
Leave it like that, don’t fix it now
Don’t turn it back into something loud
We both know where this one goes
No need to spell it out slow
Leave it like that, just let it sit
No clean ending, just call it it
You don’t have to make it right
Just don’t stay and drag it out tonight
If you stay, we go again
If you go, that’s how it ends
There’s no version we haven’t tried
So just don’t change your mind
Leave it like that, don’t fix it now
Don’t turn it back into something loud
We both know where this one goes
No need to spell it out slow
Leave it like that, just let it sit
No clean ending, just call it it
You don’t have to make it right
Just don’t stay and drag it out tonight
