Sometimes distance
is only one floor away.
Second Floor Lights sits in the strange period after something has ended without either person actually leaving. They still occupy the same familiar world and occasionally cross each other’s path, but neither reaches across the small distance between them. Nothing dramatic happened and nobody needs to be blamed; they simply stopped being part of each other’s lives.

Second floor, lights still on
Same time every night it’s on
I don’t knock, I don’t call
Just watch shadows hit the wall
You stay in, I stay out
We don’t talk it through or shout
Same place, different view
Nothing here to get into
You walk past, I don’t wave
Feels too much for what it gave
It’s not wrong, it’s just done
No big loss, no one won
You stay in, I stay out
We don’t turn it round about
Same place, different view
Nothing here to get into
If I tried, would it change
Or just feel a bit more strange
You stay in, I stay out
We don’t turn it round about
Same place, different view
Nothing left to hold onto
